Responding to No One, OpenAI Opens Up Debate on AI-Generated Porn

Everyone knows that media only takes off when it penetrates the adult market. Everything the VHS tape to the Internet reached its full moneymaking potential by entering this, shall we say, delicate ecosystem. That’s why it should come as no surprise that OpenAI is working on allowing users to create erotica and pornographic imagery. The news was first reported by Wired, and NPR had this to say about it:

“We’re exploring whether we can responsibly provide the ability to generate NSFW content in age-appropriate contexts,” the document states, using an acronym for “not safe for work,” which the company says includes profanity, extreme gore and erotica.

Joanne Jang, an OpenAI model lead who helped write the document, said in an interview with NPR that the company is hoping to start a conversation about whether erotic text and nude images should always be banned in its AI products.

“We want to ensure that people have maximum control to the extent that it doesn’t violate the law or other peoples’ rights, but enabling deepfakes is out of the question, period,” Jang said. “This doesn’t mean that we are trying now to create AI porn.”

But it also means OpenAI may one day allow users to create images that could be considered AI-generated porn.

“Depends on your definition of porn,” she said. “As long as it doesn’t include deepfakes. These are the exact conversations we want to have.”

First, to be clear, there are systems that allow you to make naughty text and images. I’m not going to link to any, but it’s abundantly clear, given the popularity of virtual AI girlfriends and the like, that people are really into this idea. And, as I’ve written before, AI companies need paying users and, historically, this kind of creative endeavor has been the most lucrative.

It’s only a matter of time that we are able to produce fully-formed movies using AI. Although what we’re seeing now is absolute hogwash — check out this “trailer” for an AI “movie” that looks like a nightmare — it’s clear that the impetus to do away with human actors is strong.

Basically the cost savings associated with not having to pay stars for showing on set is huge, whether they are fully clothed or naked. So of course OpenAI wants a piece.

In the end, AI will end up just like the Internet. It will be a very powerful commodity that we use for everything from writing reports to making movies. If OpenAI doesn’t give us porn then someone else — probably everyone else — will fill the void. What I’m saying is to be ready. It’s going to get weirder and weirder out there.
