Managing Editor
Contract, part-time, fully remote. About 30 hours a month. $2,000 to $4,000 per month. US-based.
The Media Copilot is hiring a contract Managing Editor to run our editorial operation. We’re a newsletter, podcast, online school, and consultancy helping journalists, marketers, and communications professionals put generative AI to work. Our newsroom practices what we teach: AI-accelerated workflows, human editorial judgment, and full transparency about how the two combine.
This is a hands-on role for an experienced editor who likes running things. You’ll own daily content execution, manage a junior writer, work with one of the most respected journalism institutions in the country, and operate with a high degree of autonomy. You’ll also work inside our internal AI editorial system and help shape how an AI-forward newsroom actually runs.
What you’ll do
- Produce a steady stream of content for The Media Copilot website and newsletter, working directly with the founder
- Manage our junior news writer and ensure news publishes every weekday
- Manage syndicated content on the site, primarily Stacker articles, folded into the daily flow
- Take point on our partnership with the Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI) at the University of Missouri: brainstorm and pitch service journalism ideas, liaise with RJI editors, and edit the resulting pieces
- Recruit and manage freelancers writing case studies, guides, and expert pieces
- Manage our weekly guest thought leadership column: liaise with contributors, edit their work, publish it
- Assemble, edit, and send the newsletter, with AI doing the heavy lifting on production
- Ensure stories are shared across social networks
- Own our evergreen pipeline: work with our GEO affiliate manager to produce a steady stream of useful how-to articles and guides
- Occasionally write news yourself
Who you are
- A journalist. This is a requirement, not a preference
- 3+ years managing content and people: assigning, editing, shipping, and making calls without waiting for permission
- Experienced enough to bring judgment, ambitious enough to want to build something
- Genuinely curious about AI’s role in media and knowledge work. You don’t have to be a booster, but reflexive hostility to AI makes this the wrong job. We experiment, we sometimes get it wrong, and we do it in good faith with the goal of learning and making progress
- Comfortable with async work: Slack, email, and a monthly standing meeting with RJI
The details
- Independent contractor role, approximately 30 hours/month
- $2,000/month base, plus a flexible amount on top based on RJI work, for a total range of $2,000 to $4,000/month. The variable portion scales with how actively you work the RJI pipeline
- 12-month contract with auto-renewal and an initial probationary period
- Fully remote, US-based
- Start date: on or before September 2, 2026
